Typically, WordPress plugins are pieces of software that can be added to a WordPress site. They essentially add some new features to your site while others can aid in designing, social sharing, improving SEO, etc.
Good news is that they seamlessly intergrate with your site because they’re are written in the same code that powers WordPress.
There are plenty of WordPress plugins depending on the functionality you’d wish to add to your site. This can be found in free or premium version but premium versions come with a lot more features and functionality.
Always ensure that you only go for essential plugins and not overstocking them as they’ll end up slowing down your site.
To install a plugin, you need to put the plugin files into WP-content/plugins directory. Once installed, you have the option to activate or deactivate the plugins from the plugins menu on your WP admin board.
How to install free or paid WordPress plugins
There’s a bit of a difference between in installing free WordPress plugins and paid plugins. This is because premium plugins are not available on the official WordPress plugins directory.
To begin with, let’s look at:
Installing free Plugins
On your admin board, go to plugins on your sidebar menu.
On page load, you’ll see a “Add New” button at the top of the page.
On clicking the “Add New” button, you’ll see a list of plugins that are recommended for you. Included is a search button that allows search for the plugin of your choice by typing in the name of the plugin.
In this instance we are going to use the woo-commerce plugin as an example. The best part is you really don’t have to key in the whole thing like in our case we’ll just key in “Woo“.
There is no much of a difference between installing a mobile app and a plugin on your WordPress site.
With the plugin of your choice in place, you’ll just have to click on “Install Now” to install it on your site.
With the plugin installed, the final step is to now activate the plugin by clicking on “Activate Plugin” button.
With that done, you are good to go. The plugin is installed and ready to use!
Installing Premium WordPress plugins
For starters, you’ll have to have obtained the plugin from the marketplace or purchasing from a plugin store.
On purchase, the plugin comes in ZIP format. To install:
Follow the same procedure as installing a free plugin by clicking on plugins on your sidebar menu then on “Add New” button.
On the next page, you’ll see a “Upload Plugin” button at the top of the page.
On clicking the button you’ll be able to access the plugin from your saved files on your computer and be able to upload it to your site and installing it.
With the installation done, you’ll need to activate the plugin.
That done, your plugin is online and ready for use.
The removal is also pretty straight-forward in most cases. Remove the directory for the plugin you would like to uninstall and it will be automatically deactivated. Still, always bear in mind that not all plugins are easy to install, so be sure to always refer to their documentation and installation instructions first
